In the Middle Ages, Semur-en-Brionnais was an important fiefdom of Burgundy and the capital of the Brionnais region.
Don’t miss the Château Saint-Hugues with its 9th-century square keep (the oldest in Burgundy), and the magnificent Romanesque collegiate church of Saint-Hilaire with its octagonal bell tower and carved portal. All around, beautiful old houses with an almost pinkish hue add greatly to the charm of Semur-en-Brionnais.
