Cordes-sur-Ciel, the ‘Town of a Thousand Arches’, is a charming medieval village built of stone and brick, founded in 1222 by the Count of Toulouse. Beautifully preserved, it is perched on a promontory offering a splendid view of the surrounding region.
Visitors can admire the Gothic house of the Grand Fauconnier, which houses a museum of modern and contemporary art, and, opposite, the 113-metre-deep well beneath the market hall. On the way back down, one can relax in the Jardin des Paradis (which lives up to its name), a garden that is both oriental and medieval in style, and classified as a ‘Jardin Remarquable’.
