32. Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert

Perched high above the Hérault Gorges, this charming medieval village is built in the shape of a church nave, at the entrance to a natural cirque.

An ideal setting for what is undoubtedly the most beautiful church in the Hérault: Gellone Abbey (9th–11th centuries). Saint-Guilhem was a prestigious stop on the Way of St James, which pilgrims called ‘the rose at the heart of the mountains’.
