59. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

This religious building, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is currently a cathedral based on a converted mosque. The mosque, known as the Mezquita, was built in 786 by Abd-Al-Rahman I. However, its history does not begin here! In fact, it was built on top of a church that was built by the Visigoths in 584, which itself was built on top of a Roman temple dedicated to Janus!
