The Cathedral of Saint Saviour on Spilled Blood in Saint Petersburg is renowned for its magnificent mosaics. Built at the end of the 19th century, it was completed during the reign of Nicholas II and is designed in the Russian medieval style. It takes its name from a historic and dramatic event: in 1881, Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in yet another assassination attempt against him. A sumptuous cathedral was subsequently erected in memory of the sovereign, and the bloodstained gravel was displayed inside the building.
