Located on the heights of Otowa Hill in eastern Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera (‘the temple of pure water’) is one of Japan's spiritual and architectural gems. Founded in 778, the current complex dates back to 1633, when Shogun Tokugawa Lemitsu had the temple rebuilt in the Momoyama style after multiple fires had destroyed the original buildings.
