45. The Colosseum

The Colosseum in Rome, the largest Roman amphitheatre, was built between 70 and 80 AD. It could seat more than 50,000 spectators. Its inauguration gave rise to spectacular games lasting a hundred days, during which 5,000 wild animals and 2,000 gladiators were killed.
