41. Palmyra (Syria)

An oasis in the Syrian desert northeast of Damascus, Palmyra is home to the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. At the crossroads of several civilisations, the art and architecture of Palmyra in the 1st and 2nd centuries combined Greco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences. It is most regrettable that Islamic State destroyed some of the city's sites in 2015.
