Founded in the 5th century, Timbuktu experienced its economic and cultural heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries. The three great mosques of Djingareyber, Sankoré and Sidi Yahia, sixteen mausoleums of saints and the public squares still bear witness to this prestigious past. The mosques are outstanding examples of earthen architecture and traditional techniques of continuous maintenance.
