The monumental architecture of Rapa Nui is the product of a model that is widespread in Polynesia, particularly in the Marquesas Islands, Tahiti and Raivava'e, where there are stone structures and sculptures that appear to be prototypes of the Rapanui ahu and moais. The full name of the statues means ‘living face of the ancestors’.
