Renovated as part of a nationwide drive between 2004 and 2006, the Atomium - which was not to survive Expo 58, of which it was the flagship building - is now, with over 800,000 visitors a year, the European capital's busiest tourist attraction, an art centre and an international symbol of Brussels and Belgium. It represents the conventional mesh of an iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times.
