9. Gargilesse-Dampierre

Ranked among the 100 ‘most beautiful villages in France’, Gargilesse-Dampierre had a famous admirer in the 19th century: George Sand, who settled in the Villa Algira (now open to the public). Claude Monet was also a fan of this village in the Berry region.

Here is a view of the Romanesque chapel adjoining the castle, now the village parish church. The connecting door has been bricked up, but the chapel has retained its beautiful capitals and its crypt contains some curious frescoes.
