I really enjoy this building. Its foundation dates back to 1298, when construction began on the new cathedral, under the direction of Arnolfo di Cambio.
Following Arnolfo's death in 1302, the painter Giotto di Bondone took over the project in 1334 as master mason.
He died in 1337, leaving the work unfinished and the building named after him.
Andrea Pisano continued the work, but died during the Black Death epidemic in 1348.
Work was resumed by Francesco Talenti in 1349, who completed the bell tower and gave it its current, definitive form.
