Robert Cornelius

Another 400 years passed from the first self-portrait in painting to the photographed one.
The world’s first-ever selfie was taken in October 1839 by American chemist and photography pioneer Robert Cornelius. Using a camera built from an opera glass and copper plates, he set it up outside his family's Philadelphia store. Because cameras were incredibly slow back then, he had to uncap the lens, run into the frame, and stand perfectly still for 10 to 15 minutes to capture the image.
