Apelles

"But it was Apelles […] who surpassed all the other painters who either preceded or succeeded him. Single-handed, he contributed more to painting than all the others together" [passage from Pliny’s Natural History].
There is no portrait of him, so I invented a picture here, inspired by a painting by Louis Jean François Lagrenée. None of his works have been preserved, but there are countless anecdotes and stories about him, look them up and you will appreciate them. I only tell you that it was he who pronounced the famous "Sutor, ne supra crepidam (Cobbler, no higher than the sandal)"
