Tapestry has never been a "minor visual art" (not only because of the size of the works ;) ) but you almost never know who the artists are.

Antoine Caron was a French master glassmaker, illustrator, Northern Mannerist painter and a product of the school of Fontainebleau. The Valois Tapestries (see!) were mainly modeled on his designs.
